Blues (on my Hangout music page).īob Flesher also plays it clawhammer style. And don't forget to give a listen to Wade Ward's charming old-time 3-finger banjo behind Galax-area fiddler Charlie Higgins' version of East Tenn. I'm certainly not saying it can't be clawhammered (because it certainly can & has been done very well), but just suggesting that dedicated clawhammer people give a listen to the way the old timers who made it up played it. TN Blues was just the kind of jaunty key-of-C "raggy" tune in which a 5 string banjo, if present, was usually fingerpicked. Fellow Banjo Hangout member Joseph Decosimo of Chattanooga has a picture on his Facebook page of Jimmy McCarroll as an old man playing the banjo-and if you look at his right hand you can see it's clearly 2-finger style.Į. McCarroll may also have played it on the banjo 2-finger style. Jimmy McCarroll of the Roane County Ramblers fiddled it & recorded it in the 20s with that band (backup was guitar, mandolin & tenor banjo), as do his kin today. Fiddler Charlie Bowman, who played with a band called either the Hillbillies or Al Hopkins Bucklebusters (Hillbilliies on Vocalion & Bucklebusters on the Brunswick label) is usually given credit for having come up with it.Īs Chip points out, East Tennessee Blues is still a popular tune in that part of TN and Will Keys played a wonderful 2-finger version. More East TN Blues banjo trivia: I have just uploaded a great photo of the old-time string band most associated with East Tennessee Blues on my Hangout Home Page.
